How to Make Korean Gimbap – Step by Step Guide

Gimbap is one of Korea’s most popular dishes. It’s perfect for lunch, picnics, or snacks, and consists of rice rolled with various ingredients. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide to make your own gimbap at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cooked rice (Korean short-grain rice such as Shindongjin, Koshihikari, or regular white rice)

    • Korean rice is stickier and better suited for gimbap than Vietnamese rice

  • 4 sheets of seaweed (nori)

  • 1 egg, beaten and cooked into a thin omelette

  • 1 carrot, julienned

  • 4–5 strips of pickled radish (danmuji)

  • Blanched spinach

  • Imitation crab sticks or cooked fish cake

  • Sesame oil (optional, depending on taste)

  • Salt and sesame seeds

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Cook the rice and lightly season with salt and optionally sesame oil.

  2. Julienne the carrot and lightly sauté it in oil.

  3. Blanch the spinach and season with a pinch of salt.

  4. Cook the egg and cut into thin strips.

  5. Prepare the pickled radish and imitation crab/fish cake strips.

Step 2: Assemble the Gimbap

  1. Place a sheet of seaweed with the shiny side down on a bamboo rolling mat.

  2. Spread a thin layer of rice evenly over the seaweed, leaving about 1 inch at the top.

  3. Arrange the ingredients in horizontal lines: egg, carrot, spinach, pickled radish, and crab sticks.

Step 3: Roll the Gimbap

  1. Use the bamboo mat to roll tightly from the bottom.

  2. Press gently but firmly to keep the roll compact.

  3. Brushing sesame oil is optional—it prevents drying and adds flavor if you like

Step 4: Slice and Serve

  1. Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into 1-inch thick slices.

  2. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to prevent sticking.

  3. Sprinkle a few sesame seeds on top for garnish.

Tips for Perfect Gimbap

  • Use slightly warm rice for easier rolling.

  • Don’t overfill; too much filling can break the roll.

  • Feel free to customize fillings with ham, cheese, or other vegetables.

  • Serve with pickled radish (danmuji) for authentic Korean flavor.

Summary

Making gimbap at home is easy and fun! Using Korean rice and optionally sesame oil, you can create your own delicious gimbap. Perfect for lunch boxes, picnics, or as a snack.
